July 2024 TCC Newsletter

Last month we had a church potluck and check-in where we talked about where the church has been, and where we are going. For anyone who missed that meeting, I would like to tell you here what we talked about.

First, I want to celebrate some of the highlights from 2024 that were significant to me. So far in 2024, we have: moved the Food Bank to an awesome new location, held a fantastic church talent show, launched a new Thursday night service, worshiped together at Worship Reset, hosted a relationship workshop, and added new faces to the congregation and the staff! (We’re also going to be adding another new face this month as we hire for the new groundskeeper position!) This is in addition to all the great things that have been happening on Sunday mornings and on evenings throughout the week. Thank you so much to everyone who volunteers and participates to make those things happen!

Going forward this year, I have three main priorities:
1. Sons’ and Daughters’ Ministries
As we head into the fall, we are working on developing our men’s and women’s ministries as the main place where adults get plugged in to grow and get discipled. There are a lot of benefits to mens’ and womens’ ministries: they include everyone, they are intergenerational, and they allow members to be vulnerable in ways they can’t be in mixed groups. The reason we are calling them “Sons” and “Daughters” is because we would like these ministries to also include discipling boys and girls, in cooperation with the Family Ministry. Our hope is to have groups to launch in the fall that will be able to include anyone and everyone who wants to join. (To that end, all men in the church are encouraged to take our Sons’ Ministry Survey at https://www.turnerchristianchurch.com/sons to help us make our plans).

So keep an eye out for Sons and Daughters Ministries this Fall!

2. Mature Discipleship
Before I came here, this congregation chose a vision statement that defines discipleship using three parts: Connecting with God and his church, growing in faith and love, and serving our community and world. Everything we do as a church is meant to disciple people in one of those areas–Sunday worship connects us, groups help us grow, and service and ministry teams give us opportunities to grow.

Moving forward, I want to set as an intentional goal that we will move members of this church toward mature discipleship, meaning that we want as many people as possible to be participating meaningfully in all three areas: connecting, growing and serving. If this goal was achieved completely, it would mean that every single person who connects with us during a service is also growing through a group and serving in some capacity. (This, for instance, was one of the main reasons why we created the Thursday service: we wanted to make sure that our Sunday morning servants were still able to connect.) As we move forward, hopefully what you will find is that each area of our ministry encourages you to participate in the other areas. Our services, for instance, will encourage you to grow and serve. Our groups will encourage you to serve and connect. And finally, our service and ministry teams will encourage you to connect and grow.

3.  Focused, Passionate Service
Our final goal is to make it possible for everyone to serve in ways that allow them to be focused and passionate. One of the things they teach you about churches is the “80/20 Rule:” 20% of the people do 80% of the work. If about 20% of the people are helping, then they are each helping in about 5 ways. This means they are being pulled in about 5 directions. It also means that 4 of the ways they are serving are not the areas they are truly gifted or passionate about. The thing is, God has given 80% of the gifts to the other 80%. We would love to move that number so that more people are serving in fewer ways. Now, if you are one of the 80%, you may be thinking, “I’m not serving because I have nothing to offer.” If that’s the case, you couldn't be more wrong! There are so many ways people can serve that are just as important as anything anyone does on stage with a microphone. For instance, we are looking for someone to unlock the building and make coffee on Sunday mornings. We can use people to help collect communion cups at the services. We can use people to lock up after church. We can use people to team-teach junior worship. We can use people to get trained on our booth tech (sound, projection, etc.). We can use people to send encouraging notes to people in the hospital. There are ALL KINDS of ways we can use anyone and everyone, no matter the gifts. If you think our church can’t use you, I would love you to give me a call at the church and challenge me to find a way. I am confident we can do it.

So those are the goals we have for the rest of the year. I am so excited to be doing this with all of you, and I am most excited to see what God’s plans are for us!

If you're interested in helping, you may purchase items and leave them in our baskets in the lobby or you may designate your offering for Shoeboxes or Operation Christmas Child. We'd also humbly ask for your prayer support during this time. Thank you!
